DIY Surface Cleaner

We are currently in a peculiar time that is laden with health challenges. We are all encouraged to keep good hygiene which protects and keeps us safe.

The virus that causes COVID19 is known to infect humans after they touch a contaminated surface and then touch the eyes, nose or mouth - when an infected person sneezes or coughs, saliva or mucus that carries the virus is expelled and this splatters on surfaces, then other people touch these surfaces and later touch their eyes, nostrils or mouth.

We can’t avoid touching surfaces - tables, chairs, railings, door handles, even our mobile phones! While our hand sanitizers help to kill germs on our hands, washing our hands with soap and water has been proven to be the best form of defense against the virus (reports have  stated that the virus can be disarmed with soap and water).

Truth is, we sometimes don’t remember to clean our hands, especially when we are at home, but there’s still the possibility that others, our ourselves, have somehow brought the virus into our homes or workplaces. It’s a great idea to have another form of defense - something to keep the surfaces around us germ-free.

This month we share two recipes for making a surface cleaner at home with basic ingredients you already have at home: one with liquid soap and the other with white vinegar. Read this post to learn how to make your own liquid soap at home 😊

Tools: To make any of the two recipes you will need:

A Spray container (about 500ml for the recipes in this post)

A 1 tablespoon Measuring Spoon

A 1-cup Measuring Cup

Recipe 1 - Soapy Surface Cleaner

Ingredients:

2 Cups clean water

2 Tablespoons liquid soap (can use vegetable soap)

Optional: 10-20 drops essential oil mix (I used Tea Tree and Lavender)

Process -

Make sure your spray container is clean and ready for use, then measure 2 cups of clean water and pour into the spray container (you can use a funnel to make it easier). Add 2 tablespoons of a liquid detergent and your surface cleaner is ready for use.

If you want to add some antibacterial properties to this cleaner you can add some essential oils known to have antibacterial or antiviral properties - essential oils like Tea Tree, Lavender etc. If you are adding any essential oils, you can add a total of 20 drops, and then shake the bottle to mix it all up.

Recipe 2 - White Vinegar Surface Cleaner

Ingredients:

1 Cup Clean Water

1 Cup White Vinegar

Optional: half a lime

Process -

Make sure your spray container is clean, then measure 1 cup of clean water and pour into the spray container (you can use a funnel to make it easier). Add 1 cup of white vinegar and your surface is set! If you want to add lime to this cleaner then remember to keep it in the refrigerator to prevent it from spoiling.

Note that this cleaner can be used on any surface except on marble or granite surfaces, this is because vinegar will cause marble or granite to get etched over time and ruin your beautiful surface.

How to Use the Surface Cleaner

As easy as it was to make, these surface cleaners are also easy to use. Just spray on the area you want to clean and wipe with a cloth.
