Wild Argan - "Seed of Life"

On the foothills of the Atlas Mountains of Southern Morocco grows the Argan tree, a wild tree that lives for about 150 to 200 years, it grows only in Morocco, originally. The Argan tree bears small, green, smooth fruits, similar to olives, which turns yellow and falls to the ground around May. The Berber women (natives of Morocco) pick the fallen fruits in June and July, then dry them in readiness to process the wonder oil - Argan Oil.

The Argan fruit is not only sought after by people, but goats as well, the goats have learned to climb the thorny trees and eat the fruits directly from the branches, because of the high nutritional content of the fruits, these goats are called "Argan Goats" and the meat from them is tastier, more nutritious.

The Argan tree, growing in arid soil, benefits the environment by helping to prevent desertification. Unfortunately, the number of Argan trees are reducing and the Government of Morocco has began to take steps to protect them. In 1998 UNESCO declared the Argan forest as a biosphere (a place where life dwells), but only a fraction of it is being protected.

Argan Oil comes from the kernels of the nuts found inside the Argan fruit, the pressing of this oil has been a part of Berber culture since the 13th Century, and not much has changed in the method used. Argan Oil is rich in Vitamin A, C and E, linoleic acid, Omega 6 fatty acid, and Squalene - a natural emollient and anti-oxidant.

Argan Oil is used for cooking as well as for beauty purposes. The people of Morocco use this nutty-scented, flavorful oil to cook soups, garnish meals, prepare couscous and as a dip for bread. Argan oil is also used to nourish the skin and hair, it is a deep moisturizer, improving skin elasticity, relieves sore muscles and gives the skin and hair an overall healthy glow. Because of its rich content, Argan Oil acts as an anti-aging agent, it encourages deep-cell change, increasing the re-generative rate of healthy cells - which fights wrinkles, and fades age spots.

Most Berber women learn to produce Argan oil as girls growing up, they produce it for the use of their family, and sometimes sell extras to earn some income for other household requirement. With an increase in the demand for Argan oil across the world, groups of women cooperatives have been formed, where women come together to produce Argan Oil, increasing the quantity produced, helping them earn more from it.

How Argan Oil is Pressed

The dried fruits are cleaned to remove the dried pulp from the nuts, the pulp is reserved as feed for animals. The nuts, called "Akkayn" are cracked open with a stone, called an "Argan stone", to remove the kernels within. Some nuts hold 2, 3 or 4 kernels. The kernels are creamy in color and oval  shaped, similar to almonds. The husks from the shelling of the nuts are used for firewood, so essentially, no part of the fruit goes to waste.`

If producing oil for the skin and hair, the kernels are grounded in a machine and the oil is pressed from the paste. If producing oil for cooking, the kernels are roasted lightly in a pan, and then grounded in a stone mill.

The paste is then mixed by hand, adding water to separate the oil from the paste, and then the oil is collected and bottled.

Only the Berber women participate in the processing of Argan Oil, it is a slow and meticulous process which takes about a day to produce half a liter of oil! While working in the cooperative the women tell stories, talk about their children, sing, play and laugh, making quality time.

To produce 1 liter of Argan Oil, the women need about half a bag of Argan fruits, which weighs from 25 - 30kg. From this amount of fruits, only 2kg of kernels are gotten, and this produces 1 liter of oil.
